Taking TEDxBuenosAires Outdoors

The second TEDxBuenosAires event on "The Revolution of Ideas" was held on April 8 at the La Rural community center in the heart of Buenos Aires.

Over a thousand people attended the event and enjoyed speakers such as Argentine rugby player Agustin Pichot and musicologist Marcelo Arce.

Those who could not get a ticket to the venue did not have to worry about missing the show --  the entire event was live streamed online, and also projected on two giant screens in the city, located in the Plaza San Martín and the Villa 31. Plaza San Martín is a green public space in Retiro which has a traffic of about a million people daily.  Villa 31 is a shantytown also in Retiro, home to about seventy thousand people.

A banner placed under the screens read "Inspiration and knowledge are not just for the elite."

Bring a Brown Bag Lunch to TEDxSMUTuesdays

TEDxSMUTuesdays are a weekly brown bag series held from January to May at the Skunkwork's Innovation Gym at Southern Methodist University.

Each week, a diverse group of attendees that includes students and Dallas community members, gather to view a TEDTalk and partake in lively discussion. This TEDx Salon event creates continuous dialogue around TED and TEDx beyond the yearly TEDxSMU, as well as creates a setting that sparks ideas and conversation.

Organizer Sharon Lyle says, "No one person is ever "the expert" on an particular talk, but by providing a forum for all these different people to come together over a common topic, we all seem to walk away better informed and with a broader knowledge base than had we watched the TEDTalk alone."

SMU faculty and administrators are also invited to serve as special guest curators --  they choose a favorite video to screen, as well as the theme.

One week, the Vice President of Student Affairs led a timely March discussion on busted brackets and John Wooden’s thoughts on true success.

The conversation doesn't end on Tuesdays -- a fter each event the TEDxSMU blog is updated with relevant and informational links to books, articles and other TEDTalks.

Says Natalie Stalmach, TEDxSMU Co Organizer,  "When we started the series, I thought our basis in the engineering school would lead to highly technical talks followed by highly technical discussions. However, our audience is diverse and represents a variety of fields, from science and engineering to arts, communication, and education. This diversity brings unique perspectives to each discussion. In fact, some of the highly technical talks have led to our most interesting conversations. What are the ethical implications of this technology? Does our current educational system support or even encourage the innovative thinking necessary for scientific breakthroughs?"

Bringing TED home through TEDxJakartaLive March 12th, 2011

Although delayed by over a week, the enthusiasm in Jakarta (Indonesia) toward TED2011: The Rediscovery of Wonders was not dampened. On March 12th, 2011, over 700+ people came to watch the conference's second day together. We were fortunate to secure the perfect venue "@america" - one of the first high-tech cultural centers in the world. The door opened at 10 am and we completed all the four sessions by 9pm.  It was a free-flowing event as people came to sessions of their choosing, and explored our exhibitions.

Our TEDxJakarta team was inspired by the TED Active atmosphere and set up three main areas:

The Main Auditorium

This main hall was a great cinematic auditorium complete with the latest audiovisual technologies. People sat on paddy-field inspired terrace seatings with cushions and inflatable chairs. Some even sat on the floor not wanting to miss out on the show.

Incredibly, all four sessions were fully occupied. And though we were watching a delayed screening, people were laughing, clapping and engaging the content as if it was live. Many were seen taking down notes and discussing, albeit softly, as the talks unfolded.

The Exhibition Areas

The exhibition area was prepared for people to minggle aroudn during breaks and to accommodate attendees who could not get seats in the main auditorium. The walls were digitally decorated with looping videos and pictures from TEDx events around the world. People could experiment with the Google Liquid Galaxy machine, borrowed iPads to browse TED content and learnt more about TED2011 and TED in general on our large touchscreens.

This hall was also packed with people seated on the floor when the show began.

The TEDxJakarta Classroom

The TEDxJakarta Classroom is a corner where we people could discuss the content, debate on anything and learn more about TED and TEDxJakarta. Across LCD screens and touchscreens, we showed our past videos and informational slides on our direction. Our volunteers encouraged people to participate more on the discussions on TED.com and to look into hosting their own TEDx events.

Reaching New Heights at TEDxWaterloo

At TEDxWaterloo in Ontario, Canada -- which took place on March 3rd, 2011 -- attendees found themselves face-to-face with a “Tower of Tweets."

Five Christie MicroTiles --  world-famous digital projection screens -- were stacked atop one another to form a column in the venue’s lobby.  Taking this technology, Patrick Dinnen of Media Lab Toronto designed a custom Twitter wall that pulled and displayed all tweets with the #TEDxWaterloo hashtag tweeted during the event. He wanted to create an easy way to view virtual conversations in the real world:

Here's a short video of Dinnen's "Tower of Tweets" in action.

TEDxBerkeley Q & A on Reddit

Chris Anderson had a wonderful Q&A with the members of the Reddit community three months ago [ http://blog.ted.com/2010/01/teds_chris_ande_3.php ] which was very well-received, with thoughtful questions and answers all around.

In the same spirit, I initiated a thread on Reddit's highly-trafficked sub-section IAMA/AMA ("I Am A [X]/"Ask Me Anything") as co-curator of TEDxBerkeley (coming up in April 3rd, 2010). Link to thread is here: http://www.bit.ly/TEDxReddit

Be delighted to hear from those of you with Reddit accounts (and for those of you new to Reddit, it takes less than 30 seconds to set up an account) - all thoughtful questions will be promptly answered.

Cheers!
